We urge the media to be careful when covering violent groups

Pride Week will open in Tbilisi on July 1 and will end on July 5 with a Pride March. In this regard, ultra-radical groups have announced the protest demonstrations against the Pride Week.

The urges the media to be careful when covering violent groups and not to encourage discrimination. Freedom of expression is the most important value in a democratic society and no one has the right to restrict it. Therefore, it is necessary for the media to be prudent and ethically cover the Pride Week.

The media has a social responsibility not only not to aggravate the discrimination, but also to carry out informational actions against irrational fears and disgust in society.

The Council of the Charter of Journalistic Ethics addresses the journalists with several recommendations:

• Inform the public about the goals and motivations of ultra-right groups when covering them;

• Try not to promote an intolerant, discriminatory environment, incite hatred;

• When posting hate speech, you should clearly state the purpose of the coverage. Show that you oppose such expressions and positions. Opposing does not imply a verbal reference to "we oppose the respondent's views". You may not share the respondent's position in any other form or text;

• Do not cover the calls for violence, hate speech.
